ORCHARD OF LAMENTATIONS
This is a hidden section of the Hammer of Retribution Ogg-Cast website, deliberately not linked to from the main menu.
At times, on the Ogg-Cast, I've gone off on a massive, rambling rant - the way long-term listeners have come to expect - when I am aggrieved by something I would perceive as negative happening in the metal scene that I have proudly nailed my colours to since 1994. Those colours haven't half slid in recent years, though - disillusionment with the direction the scene was heading filtered through in early 2013, resulting in the first cessation of the monthly Ogg-Cast schedule in August that year. I came back for a second monthly series in 2014 but it, too, was stopped in its tracks a little over two years later.
To help explain what's gone so wrong and why for those who either haven't listened to the relevant Ogg-Casts, don't have the required time to sift through them or just plain can't be bothered (though, if that's the case, why are you even looking at this site anyway?), I have transcribed these rants and moans into text form so they can be read out of context. These now form the Orchard of Lamentations.
LAMENTATIONS FROM THE OGG-CASTS
LAMENTATION 1: PRELUDE TO SILENCE
Taken from Ogg-Cast 40, ...And All That Was Left Was Silence, August 2013
An explanation of why I decided to stop the show's first monthly series.
LAMENTATION 2: MAY THE HAMMER SMASH THE SICKLE
Taken from Ogg-Cast 61, Great Scott!, October 2015
Originally intended to be part of that episode but separated from it and presented as a standalone 15-minute excerpt. A warning about the tactics of far-left organisations such as Antifa and UAF and the threat their actions pose to us, and to folk metal in particular, in light of the damaging accusations made by Karl Spracklen against us.
LAMENTATION 3: THE DEPARTURE OF THE WANDERER
Taken from Ogg-Cast 66, ...And So Departs The Wanderer, April 2016
An explanation of why I decided to stop the show's second monthly series - as well as an insight into the more troubling political developments in the metal scene at large, an investigation of where I do and don't belong now, and the potential fallout from that in the conclusion.
LAMENTATION 4: STATE OF THE JIM ADDRESS
Taken from Ogg-Cast 67, Heathen Tales And Northern Hails, September 2016
An update on the trials and tribulations of the previous Lamentation from five months before, clearing up some of the confusion, allaying some of the fears, and finding voices on YouTube who are better at representing what I think than I am.
LAMENTATION 5: STATE OF THE JIM ADDRESS II
Taken from Ogg-Cast 68, A New Hope?, January 2017
Further analysis on the ingroup and the outgroup in the current metal scene, and why I've had to make a few changes for the new year in an attempt to haul myself away from the event horizon rather than fall further towards it.
LAMENTATION 6: THE WYRD WAY OUT
Taken from Ogg-Cast 68B, The Wyrd Way Out, February 2017
My resignation statement from the Wyrd Ways Rock Show, some of which is a repeat of my observations, problems and grievances with the metal scene for the WWRS audience that Ogg-Cast listeners already knew, the rest is an added bonus as to why the scene has become as politically incompatible with my existence as it has.
WHY THE PEACEFUL MAJORITY IS IRRELEVANT
Paul at Celestial Junk, 21 February 2006
Recommended reading for those who want to know where Brigitte Gabriel was looking when she came up with a very similar speech in 2011.
I CAN TOLERATE ANYTHING EXCEPT THE OUTGROUP
Scott Alexander at slatestarcodex.com, 30 September 2014
Referenced in several Ogg-Casts around 2016 and 2017, an in-depth explanation of the formation of ingroups and outgroups, and the consequences when the boundaries change; note that this is written by an American for a primarily American audience, so it uses American election colours to describe the "tribes".
VIEW FROM THE ONLINE BUNKER: TO TRUMP OR NOT TO TRUMP?
Alan Averill at Zero Tolerance Magazine, 7 January 2017
Primordial's outspoken frontman tackles the rise of the New Left (as he terms them) head-on, not least their zeal for identity politics, absolutism and censorship. Most of his concerns are directed at Western college campuses but every last one I've seen infesting the metal scene. Alan has since made references to The Culture War at Primordial gigs and on the 2018 album Exile Amongst The Ruins.
METAL, #METOO AND A DIFFERENT FEMALE PERSPECTIVE
Keri O'Shea at charnelhouse.co.uk, 18 March 2018
The SocJus Left has an annoying habit of creating an ideological echo chamber around everything they infest and attempt to destroy. Keri takes a sledgehammer to that echo chamber in the metal scene and slaughters one of its sacred cows, even using the SocJus Left's own rules against them.
METAL HAS A NAZI HUNTERS PROBLEM
Keri O'Shea at charnelhouse.co.uk, 21 April 2018
A follow-up to the above article; Keri dissects the SocJus Left's unquenchable lust to cry wolf and unearth a Nazi on every corner of the metal scene where they don't exist, creating problems that shouldn't exist and never did before.
THE PREACHERS OF THE GREAT AWOKENING
Bo Winegard & Ben Winegard at Quillette, 21 September 2018
On Ogg-Cast 66 I struggled to put into words what I meant by "The Cult" that I observed infecting the metal scene and attempting to change it beyond something I recognised as somewhere I belonged. The Winegards have done it. Just add veganism into their description of the new religion of "Wokeness" and it becomes as clear as optic fibre.
